I thought that for nine dollars a steak quesadilla was kind of expensive but they did not disappoint. My friend and I came in last night for a quick bite, we were hungry. First of all the tortilla that they used was huge so it was a perfect size for us. No lie it was one of the best if not the best quesadillas I've ever had. They were not stingy on the meat also and it was extremely juicy so it was so so so tasty. They had two people working both helpful and friendly. If a simple quesadilla was that tasty I can only imagine how the other menu items are... ill be back. Only thing I would change is the red salsa they gave us it wasn't spicy at all.

The burrito tasted like they wrapped canned food up. Holy moly! Nice staff, don't get me wrong. But the food is atrocious. Seriously, it's bad. Meat is tough. Sauces are off big time.

Some big curly haired woman was so incredibly rude. She overcharged me and then got upset when I called her out. The chorizo breakfast burrito wasn't even that good. I'm never coming back.

This place is more than just food. In classic LA fashion this family run Mexican restaurant is wedged between an out of business Baskin Robbins and a pop + mom Indian restaurant in an unassuming, overlooked strip mall in the San Fernando Valley. I've been going here (and the Valley Village location) since I was a kid so I'm obviously biased however I believe this place perfected the beauty of simplicity: the ability to extract all extraneous elements and focus only on precisely what is needed to communicate flavor and texture.
Similar to the outward appearance of the location, the food is unpretentious yet inviting. The interior decor of El Chavo is as authentic as the carne asada cultivated over 3+ generations. It's a place for any passerby or any person of any color or background to stumble on and greet destiny. The staff is warm but in the kind of way an old grandfather war veteran might be; a stoic and formidable entity whose trust and respect you must earn in order to gain access to the precious insight of what it means to be human. Sorry I'm kinda of rambling but the ppl here are in part what make this place outstanding.
Back to the food-- it's better than great. I usually get a carne asada burrito wet no beans add rice with a hard shell chicken taco. I've ordered this now for the last 5-7 years; some of my best friends who have also been going to this place for over 20+ years have their own orders bc there is no one right choice here-- each persons specific order becomes an extension of who we are as people. The food is like the porridge from Goldilocks and the three bears-- the one that's just right. There is not too much or too little of anything in each bite. The food has been perfected over generations and now in 2018 customers consume the accumulation of so much hard work, creativity and love for the food and the people that eat it.
I can't come here without being flooded by both hope and sadness. Hope that there are still people out there beyond the distractions of life who still care to do good for the sake of doing it. And sadness...well bc it's humble beauty makes me wonder why life is made so complex.
The food here is similar to music in the way it attaches itself so strongly to the senses and memory. Like the song you share with someone close that brings nostalgia and longing. It reminds me of how in this messed up world that's spinning a zillion miles an hour out of control there is still reason to fight for what we truly believe. -

Never again here freakin expensive just for 4 tacos and a drink $15 plus they don't even have the hot sauces out you gotta ask with there cheap ass. Couldn't give me a refill for $1 they want it $2 like I guess they are in the need.
